The annual Georgetown Hockey Alumni Game was played on Saturday, April 5,
2008, at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, VA. It was a
well-attended event and brought together Hoya hockey players from the past
20 years, including standouts from the classes of 1988, 1990, 1996, 2001,
2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.
The alumni team consisted of Dave Shepherd ('88), Neil McGinness ('90),
Ed Brady ('90), Bill Carroll ('90), Steve Gorman ('90), Mike Stransky
('96), Mike Jackman ('01), Jason Barker ('01), Mike Sussman ('04), George
Livadas ('04), T. Sean Lynch ('04), Shep Halsey ('05), Joe Spitz ('05),
Liam Hardy ('06), Chris Murphy ('07), John Stebbins ('07), and Luke
Holden ('07). The Hoya alumni were coached by Mike Griswold ('90) and
Chas Dorman ('03).
The game was an exciting full-ice contest featuring excellent skating,
no-look passes, breakaway goals, sensational saves, and tired legs. All
joking aside, it was a very well-played game with outstanding talent from
many Hoya teams and outstanding sportsmanship by all. Although there
would have been no loser, regardless of the score, the game ended in a
7-7 tie followed by the first ever alumni game shootout.
The alumni team skated three full lines on both offense and defense and
were well-represented in goal by the stellar play of Jason Barker, who
unofficially made 55 saves. The '08 Hoyas jumped out to a 4-1 lead at
the end of the first period, while the alumni were still checking their
BlackBerries and getting acclimated to the new arena. Shep Halsey scored
the first goal of the game for the alumni, assisted by George Livadas and
T. Sean Lynch.
In the second period, the chemistry started to develop among alumni
teammates as they adjusted to their new lines. In a dramatic turnaround,
the alumni scored 4 goals in the second period to create a one-goal game
and heighten the excitement. At the end of the second period, the score
was 6-5. During this period, the Hoya alumni were led by T. Sean Lynch
with 2 goals, assisted by the phenomenal passing of Shep Halsey, Chris
Murphy, and George Livadas. Also in the second period, Mike Sussman
scored off a rebound in heavy traffic, and Luke Holden fired a wrister
into the upper shelf of the goal to further energize the alumni squad.
On defense, the Hoya alumni were led by Mike Stransky, Joe Spitz, Neil
McGinness, Bill Carroll, Liam Hardy, Chris Murphy, and John Stebbins.
The defense held the high-flying '08 Hoyas to 2 goals in the second
period and only 1 in the third.
In the third period, defenseman Neil McGinness brought the crowd to its
feet with a blistering slapshot from the point that found nothing but net
and tied the score at 6-6. Neil's goal was assisted by Bill Carroll.
After the '08 Hoyas scored late in the third period to regain the lead
(with a running clock), the alumni team answered on a fabulous breakaway
goal in the closing minutes by T. Sean Lynch to tie the game at 7-7. It
was Sean's third goal of the game--an alumni hat trick--and the score
remained tied when time expired.
In the shootout, senior co-captains Dave Glynn (Stoughton, MA) and Conor
Hickton (Pittsburgh, PA) scored the only goals (with Dave's coming on a
sensational, between-the-legs, 360-degree spinning move). However, it
was unclear to which team these goals were awarded. Dave and Conor are
seniors and wisely looking ahead to next year and securing a spot on the
alumni team. They were seen discussing this with alumni after the game
at the Hockey House, and we will have to wait until next year's game to
determine how it was resolved.
Finally, a special thank you to many who made the alumni game an
enjoyable and memorable event, sponsored by the Georgetown Hockey Booster
Club. Chris Scanlon did a great job as the referee. Peter Black Sr.
superbly ran the clock, as he has done for three consecutive years, and
provided drinks for the post-game reception. Joe Horgan Sr. obtained the
awesome alumni game jerseys and provided cases of refreshments. Rob
Walsh provided the food at the Hockey House, created the wonderful senior
gifts, and was the game photographer. Player-coaches Doug Stewart and
Brad Card deserve a special thanks for their time and patience throughout
the year, and for delegating alumni game head coaching responsibilities
to Adam Willner, currently studying at Oxford but due back with the Hoyas
in the fall. In addition, thank you to all the current and former Hoya
hockey players who participated in the game and post-game reception at
the Hockey House. This was your event and we were pleased to sponsor it.
It was a great culmination to another fine season of Hoya Hockey.
