On Saturday, January 24, 2009, the Hoyas travelled to the Triangle Sports Plex in Hillsborough, NC to face-off against the Duke University Blue Devils. It was the second meeting of the season between the teams, with Georgetown winning the first contest at home by the score of 3-1. The game was hard-fought, fiercely contested, and close throughout. Every loose puck was pursued with a vengeance and no shot was uncontested. Neither team ever led by more than one goal. Georgetown led 1-0 at the end of the first period on a power play goal by Dan Lechner (Jr-Rockville, MD), assisted by Hugh Manahan (Sr-Greenville, DE) and Adam Willner (Sr-Montclair, NJ). In the second period, Duke tied the game on a penalty shot. That was the only tally in the second period for either team. In the third period, Georgetown took the lead once again on a power play goal by Adam Willner, assisted by Brendan Surma (Sr-Pittsburgh, PA). With 10 minutes left in the third period, Duke tied the game 2-2 during a 5-on3 power play opportunity. For the remainder of the game, and a 4-on-4 overtime of five minutes, defense prevailed and neither team could score a goal. Georgetown goaltender Greg Graham (Jr-Downingtown, PA) played a great game, recording 36 saves. Finally, during the shootout, Duke found the back of the net just once, but that was enough to secure a shootout victory. Overall, both teams skated extremely hard and constantly challenged each other. The referee called a very tight game and whistled 22 penalties. Duke was assessed 31 penalty minutes and Georgetown was assessed 24. The most significant penalty of the evening was the ejection of Duke defenseman Michael Black, the brother of Georgetown forward Peter Black. Michael was disqualified for fighting with 14:12 remaining in the second period. No one was hurt during the scuffle and Michael did not throw any punches at his brother Peter, maybe because he was not on the ice at the time.
