Duke 3, Georgetown 1. On Saturday, February 21, 2009, during the semi-finals of the ACCHL Tournament, Georgetown suffered a tough 3-1 loss to Duke. Although the Hoyas outshot the Blue Devils 31 to 17, Duke capitalized on two power play opportunities and played a tight, disciplined defense to earn the victory. The first period was an intensive defensive struggle, with neither team able to penetrate the goal. Georgetown outshot Duke 11 to 2 in the first period but was unable to score. The failure to take advantage of this early opportunity would prove to be fatal to the Hoyas in the end. In the second period, Duke picked up the pace, outshot the Hoyas 10 to 7, and held a 2-0 lead heading into the final intermission. Midway through the third period, Duke once again found the back of the net to take a commanding 3-0 lead. With 4:50 remaining in the final period, Lukas Autenried (Fr-Wallisellen, Switzerland) gave the Hoyas renewed life by scoring on a nice move in heavy traffic, assisted by Charlie Walsh (Jr-Cheshire, CT). In the final 4 minutes, the Hoyas made a strong effort to close the gap to a single goal, and had several good opportunities at close range, but were unable to score. |
