On Friday, February 6, 2009, at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD, the Georgetown Hoya Hockey Team (ACHA Division II) faced-off against the University of Maryland Terrapins (ACHA Division I). Georgetown played well for 55 minutes, but unfortunately the game was 60 minutes long.

The final score is misleading because it was a one-goal game until the final five minutes. Georgetown outskated Maryland in the first period and outshot them 13 to 8. The second period was fairly even with each team registering 9-10 shots. Maryland came alive in the third period and outshot the Hoyas 13 to 8. At the end of the game, the shots were almost even with Maryland holding a slight 31-30 advantage.

Hugh Manahan (Sr-Greenville, DE) tallied the first score of the game and gave the Hoyas a 1-0 lead at the 11:17 mark in the second period, after receiving a nice crossing pass from George McGinninss (Sr-New Canaan, CT), further assisted by Richie McGinniss (Fr-New Canaan, CT). Maryland tied the game 1-1 with 5:37 remaining in the second period by taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power play. The score remained tied 1-1 going into the third period of a tight defensive struggle.

Midway through the third period, the momentum started to turn in favor of the Terrapins. At the 11:48 mark, Maryland scored to take its first lead of the game, 2-1. The score remained 2-1 with 5 minutes remaining in the game and the victor far from decided. In the final 4 minutes and 11 seconds, however, the wheels fell off for the Hoyas and the Terrapins scored 3 unanswered goals (shorthanded, breakaway, and odd-man rush) to secure a 5-1 victory.
