NC State |
On Friday, January 23, 2009, at the RecZone in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Georgetown Hoya Hockey team defeated the Wolfpack of NC State by the score of 4-2. It was a hard-fought, high energy game with strong play up and down the ice, both on offense and defense. The victory was especially sweet for Georgetown because earlier in the season, although Georgetown defeated the Wolfpack 6-3 on the ice, NC State was awarded the win by forfeit when they went to the league, after the game, and complained that the pads on Georgetown's goalie were not certified in compliance with current league rules. As a result, NC State was awarded 2 points for the win by forfeit, and Georgetown was handed a loss and deducted one point in the league standings. Therefore, going into the January 23 game, NC State and Georgetown each had 3-2 records in the league, but NC State was tied for second place with 6 points and Georgetown was in fourth place with 5 points. In the January 23 game, the Wolfpack led 1-0 at the end of the first period. Georgetown came out with a vengeance in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. At the 17:56 mark in the second period, Hugh Manahan (Sr-Skillman, NJ) scored on a rebound, assisted by Dan Lechner (Jr-Rockville, MD) and Charlie Beller (Soph-Chappaqua, NY). With 11:08 remaining in the second period, Peter Black (Sr-Bethesda, MD) received an outlet pass from Brian Brauth (G-Hoboken, NJ) at the blue line in the Georgetown zone, skated the length of the ice on the right wing, and delivered a nice centering pass to a streaking Alex Yale-Loehr (Fr-Ithaca, NY) who buried it in the back of the net to give the Hoyas their first lead of the game. Midway through the third period, Alex Yale-Loehr silenced the Wolfpack with a tremendous goal in a 4-on-4 situation. Alex had the puck behind the Wolfpack goal with 2 defenders on him. He somehow eluded the defense, skated up the right side, faked a pass to the point, and then cut to the slot and fired a perfect wrist shot past the NC State goalie to give the Hoyas a 3-1 lead. Shortly thereafter, however, the Wolfpack scored on a power play to cut the Hoyas' lead to 3-2. Finally, with about a minute remaining in the game, NC State pulled their goaltender. Dan Lechner received a pass from Adam Willner (Sr-Montclair, NJ), deked a defender, and scored an empty-netter to ice the victory for the Hoyas. It was a fine all-around victory for the Hoyas, and special recognition goes to Georgetown goalie Greg Graham (Jr-Downingtown, PA) who made several phenomenal saves to secure the win--all with pads that have been certified by the league! |
