UNC

On Sunday, January 25, 2009, in Hillsborough, North Carolina, the Georgetown Hoya hockey team faced-off against the University of North Carolina Tarheels. It was a 10:15 am start, following a late Saturday night game against Duke. The Hoyas might have been tired, but they rallied for the occasion and soundly defeated the Tarheels. At 5:11 in the first period, Georgetown jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a fast break goal by Dan Lechner (Jr-Rockville, MD), assisted by Ryan Murphy (Sr-Clifton Park, NY) and Charlie Beller (Soph-Chappaqua, NY). The Tarheels tied the game 1-1 on a power play shot from the point with merely 52 seconds left in the first period. Hoya goalie Clayton Kossl (Soph-Kinnelon, NJ) was screened on the play and had no chance.

At 8:33 in the second period, Alex Yale-Loehr (Fr-Ithaca, NY) snapped a wrist shot past the goalie from in front of the net, rebounding a shot from the point by Charlie Beller. At 3:32 in the second period, Hugh Manahan (Sr-Greenville, DE) unleashed a strong shot from the slot that found nothing but net, assisted by Will Peterson (Sr-Wayzata, MN). Finally, midway through the third period, Alex Yale-Loehr took control of the puck in the Georgetown zone and raced down the left side of the rink, outskating the pursuing defenseman. Alex laid a perfect centering pass on the stick of Lukas Autenried (Fr-Switzerland) as he drove for the net. With both players going full speed, Lukas redirected Alex's pass past the UNC goalie for the Hoyas' fourth and final goal of the game.

Overall, the Hoyas' defense played extremely well, led by Brendan Surma (Sr-Pittsburgh, PA), George McGinniss (Sr-New Canaan, CT), Charlie Beller (Soph-Chappaqua, NY), Gus Thompson (Soph-New Canaan, CT), Ryan Murphy (Sr-Clifton Park, NY), and Richie McGinniss (Fr-New Canaan, CT). Clayton Kossl was outstanding in goal, notching 35 saves.
