On Saturday, February 14, 2009, in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Georgetown University Hockey team soundly defeated the University of Virginia Cavaliers 10-1. The Hoyas dominated play throughout, scoring 3 goals in the first period, 3 in the second, and 4 in the final frame to ice the victory. This was the Hoyas' final game of the regular season, and they now prepare for the ACCHL playoffs, which are scheduled to begin on Friday, February 20 in Roanoke, VA. With this victory, the Hoyas finished in third place in the ACCHL with a record of 6-3-1 (behind Virginia Tech (9-0-1) and Duke (7-3-0). The Hoyas likely will play NC State in the first round of the playoffs, although the pairings and final schedule have not yet been announced.

In Charlottesville, the Hoyas dominated on both ends of the ice. The offensive star of the game for Georgetown was Senior Co-Captain Adam Willner (Montclair, NJ). Adam was healthy, rested, and unstoppable, scoring 4 goals and notching 2 assists on a variety of outstanding moves in the offensive zone. Several other Hoyas had strong games and contributed to the victory. Alex Yale-Loehr (Fr-Ithaca, NY) scored 2 goals on quick rushes to the net. Dan Lechner (Jr-Rockville, MD) had 4 assists--delivering nice passes from behind the net, the corner, and across the slot. Lukas Autenried (Fr-Wallisellen, Switzerland) scored the first goal of the game by netting a rebound. Alternate Captain Pete Black (Sr-Bethesda, MD) scored on a hard wrist shot from the left circle. Richie McGinniss (Fr-New Canaan, CT) found the back of the net on a nice shot in heavy traffic. Joe Horgan (Jr-Lansdale) scored on a rebound, and Fabian Fondriest (Fr-Concord, MA) scored the last goal of the game on an outstanding wrist shot from the left circle. Andrew Foley (Jr-New York, NY) was very active in the offensive zone and notched 2 assists.

The Hoyas' defense was virtually impenetrable, allowing only a tipped power play goal in the third period. Georgetown's defense was led by Gus Thompson (Soph-New Canaan, CT), who registered 2 assists. Co-Captain Charlie Walsh (Jr-Cheshire, CT) had several hits and one assist. Alternate Captain Brendan Surma (Sr-Pittsburgh, PA) delivered many strong shots in front of the net and notched an assist. Charlie Beller (Soph-Chappaqua, NY) and Alec Estey (Fr-Toronto, Canada) shut down several Cavalier attempts to penetrate and started Hoya attacks with effective breakout passes. In goal, Greg Graham (Jr-Downingtown, PA) shut down the Cavaliers in the first two periods, and Clayton Kossl (Soph-Kinnelon, NJ) closed out the game to secure the Hoyas' victory.
