Georgetown 6, University of Virginia 0.

On Friday, February 20, 2009, at the Roanoke Civic Center, the Georgetown hockey team earned an impressive 6-0 victory over the University of Virginia in the first round of the ACCHL playoffs. The Hoyas outskated and outplayed the Cavaliers throughout the contest, netting 2 goals in each period. The Hoyas played solid team defense and outshot the Cavaliers 53 to 16.

Senior Captain Adam Willner (Montclair, NJ) started the scoring for Georgetown in the first five minutes of the game on a hard wrist shot from inside the right circle, assisted by Charlie Walsh (Jr-Cheshire, CT) and Dan Lechner (Jr-Rockville, MD). With 45 seconds remaining in the first period, Alex Yale-Loehr (Fr-Ithaca, NY) raced down the left side of the ice and made a perfect crossing pass to a streaking Dan Lechner who beat the Virginia goaltender at the net to give the Hoyas a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.

The second period featured the offensive firepower of defenseman Brendan Surma (Sr-Pittsburgh, PA). Merely 47 seconds into the second period, the Hoyas' Alternate Captain ripped a powerful slap shot from the left point that the Virginia goaltender may have heard but could not see. It landed in the upper right corner of the net to give the Hoyas a 3-0 lead. Later in the second period, Surma struck again by firing another laser-like slap shot from the left point into the top shelf to give the Hoyas a comfortable 4-0 lead heading into the second intermission.

In the third period, Lukas Autenried (Fr-Wallisellen, Switzerland) scored on a rebound, assisted by Alec Estey (Fr-Toronto, Canada) and Dan Lechner.
