Georgetown 7, Catholic University 2. On Friday, October 2, 2009, at the Ft. DuPont Ice Rink in Washington, DC, the Georgetown Hoya Hockey Team opened the 2009-2010 season on a winning note by soundly defeating the Cardinals of Catholic University by the score of 7-2. The Hoyas started strong and fast in the first period and jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The offensive star of the first period, and for the game, was Brian Brauth (MSB, Hoboken, NJ). Brian scored a hat trick in the first period, and added goals in the second and third period, for an unbelievable tally of 5 goals in the game. Brian scored on a variety of powerful moves in heavy traffic in front of the net or in the slot, including an awesome backhander in the second period. It was an incredible performance. The Hoyas' other two goals were also impressive. With 1:15 remaining in the first period, co-captain Charlie Walsh (Sr, Cheshire, CT) took control of the puck deep in the defensive zone, fought through several defenders, skated end-to-end, and buried the puck deep in the Cardinals' net to give the Hoyas a 4-0 lead. In the middle of the second period, Alex Yale-Loehr (Soph, Ithaca, NY) was awarded a penalty shot when a Cardinals' defender covered the puck in the crease. Alex took full advantage of the opportunity, and scored on a beautiful deke of the Cardinals' goaltender. The Hoyas' defense was extremely solid the entire game, and continually frustrated the CU forwards. The Hoyas's defense was led by Charlie Walsh, George McGinniss (Sr, New Canaan, CT), Richie McGinniss (Soph, New Canaan, CT), Pete Bourneuf (Soph, Boston, MA), Alec Estey (Soph, Toronto, CAN), and Gus Thompson (Jr, New Canaan, CT). Greg Graham (Sr, Downingtown, PA) stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced in the first and second period, and Clayton Kossl (Jr, Kinnelon, NJ) stopped 8 of the 9 shots he faced in the third period to close out the victory for the Hoyas. For the game, the Hoyas outshot the Cardinals 37 to 22. There were 33 penalties in the game--20 by Catholic University and 13 by Georgetown. |
