GWU

Georgetown 4, George Washington 1.

On Friday, January 15, 2010, at Ft. Dupont Ice Arena in Washington, DC, the Georgetown Hoya Hockey team defeated the Colonials of George Washington University 4-1, avenging an early season loss to GW.

GW scored the first goal of the game and was leading 1-0 with five minutes remaining in the first period. Thereafter, Hoya defenseman and co-captain Charlie Walsh (Sr-Cheshire, CT) ignited the Hoya's offense by scoring two power play goals on wrist shots from the point. Charlie's first goal, with 5:22 remaining in the first period, was assisted by Alex Yale-Loehr (Soph-Ithaca, NY) and Gus Thompson (Jr-New Canaan, CT). Charlie's second goal, midway into the second period, was assisted by Pete Owen (Freshman-Westwood, MA) and Gus Thompson.

Toward the end of the second period, the Hoyas gained a two-goal advantage on a beautiful, backhanded, breakaway shorthanded goal by Lukas Autenried (Soph-Wallisellen, Switzerland), assisted by Dan Lechner (Sr-Rockville, MD). Finally, with 7:42 remaining in the third period, Alex Yale-Loehr put the game out of reach by gaining control of the puck in the neutral zone, racing down the left side, and scoring on a strong move to the goal in heavy traffic.

Meanwhile, the Hoya defense was solid the entire game, holding GW to 15 shots on goal, and only 4 in the final period. The Hoya defense was anchored by Charlie Walsh, Gus Thompson, Charlie Beller (Jr-Chappaqua, NY), Richie McGinniss (Soph-New Canaan, CT), Alec Estey (Soph-Toronto, Canada), and Pete Bourneuf (Soph-Boston, MA). Greg Graham (Sr-Downingtown, PA), was stellar in goal, holding to one goal a GW squad that defeated the Hoyas 5-1 in the second game of the season.
