Georgetown 4, University of North Carolina 2. On Friday, December 4, 2009, at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, VA, the Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina, 4-2. Georgetown was leading 3-0 in the middle of the third period, but the Tar Heels fought back to 3-2 and made it a close game. The first period was a scoreless tussle with Georgetown outshooting UNC 19 to 10. With 15:45 remaining in the second period, the Hoyas broke the ice when Dan Lechner (Sr-Rockville, MD) scored on a one-timer from the slot, set up by a nice pass from behind the net by Brad Cadigan (Freshman-Weymouth, MA). Later in the second period, George McGinniss (Sr-New Canaan, CT) ripped a slap shot from the point that bounced off the back boards and into the slot. Joe Horgan (Sr-Lansdale, PA) one-timed the puck past the UNC goaltender to give the Hoyas a 2-0 lead. Midway through the third period, Alex Yale-Loehr (Soph-Ithaca, NY) gave the Hoyas a 3-0 lead when, unassisted, he took control of the puck in the neutral zone, outskated the Tar Heels down the right side, cut toward the goal, and delivered a perfect wrist shot over the goalie's right shoulder and into the top left shelf of the goal. The Tar Heels, however, refused to give up or concede defeat. In fact, they scored the next 2 goals of the game, cutting the Hoyas' lead to 3-2 with six minutes remaining. The Hoyas then tightened their defense and did not allow another tally. Finally, with 17 seconds remaining in the game and the UNC goalie on the bench and replaced by an extra attacker, Brad Cadigan scored his inaugural goal for the Hoyas on a backhander from the right side, assisted by Charlie Beller (Jr-Chappaqua, NY). Overall, the Hoyas outshot the Tar Heels 52 to 30. Goaltender Greg Graham (Sr-Downingtown, PA) notched another victory for the Hoyas, saving 28 shots, including many from close range.
