UVA

Georgetown 4, University of Virginia 0.

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, at the Charlottesville Ice Park in Charlottesville, VA, the Georgetown University Hoyas defeated the University of Virginia Cavaliers 4-0. The Hoyas dominated the game, outshooting the Cavaliers 40-28, including 17 to 3 in the final period.

Georgetown jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, largely due to the stellar play of senior defenseman and co-captain Charlie Walsh (Sr- Cheshire, CT). With 6:28 remaining in the first period, Charlie blasted a slap shot from the blue line that the UVA goalie could not contain. Joe Horgan (Sr-Lansdale, PA) and Peter Owen (Freshman-Westwood, MA) controlled and netted the rebound to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. With 2:38 remaining in the first period, Charlie took control of the puck in the neutral zone, eluded several defenders, skated hard toward the slot, and fired a wrist shot over the goalie’s shoulder and into the net to give the Hoyas a 2-0 lead. Lukas Autenried (Soph-Wallisellen, Switzerland) notched the assist.

In the second period, the Hoyas extended their lead to 3-0 on another slap shot from just inside the blue line, this time by Charlie Beller (Jr-Chappaqua, NY), assisted by Dan Lechner (Sr-Rockville, MD) and Lukas Autenried. In the third period, and the Hoyas on a power play, Dan Lechner and Alex Yale-Loehr (Soph-Ithaca, NY) found Charlie Walsh at the top of the right circle. Charlie connected on a wicked one-timer that was perfectly placed and landed in the upper right corner of the net. This gave the Hoyas a 4-0 lead, which was the final score.

On the defensive end, the Hoyas’ victory was made possible by the play of defensemen Charlie Walsh, Charlie Beller, George McGinniss (Sr-New Canaan, CT), Peter Bourneuf (Soph-Boston, MA), and Gus Thompson (Jr-New Canaan, CT), and by the outstanding play of Georgetown goaltender Clayton Kossl (Jr-Kinnelon, NJ), who delivered the Hoyas’ first shutout of the season.

With the victory, the Hoyas improved their record to 4-2 overall, and 1-0 in the ACCHL.
