UVA

Georgetown 8, University of Virginia 1.

On Saturday, December 5, 2009, at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD, the Georgetown Hoyas, inspired by the final games of graduating seniors George McGinniss and Chris Jordan, soundly defeated the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia, 8-1.

Georgetown outplayed the Cavaliers in every phase of the game, outshooting them 57 to 16. Thirteen (13) Hoyas racked up goals or assists. The first star of the game was Hoya defenseman George McGinniss (Sr-New Canaan, CT), who concluded his Georgetown Hockey career in style with 1 goal and 3 assists. McGinniss' final goal came with 15:55 remaining in the third period, on a blistering slap shot from the right point. Immediately after his goal, George proceeded directly to the Hoyas' locker room and showers, stating that scoring a goal on his final shot and last shift was the way he wanted to remember his final hockey game for the Hoyas.

The second star of the game was Hoya Captain Charlie Walsh (Sr-Cheshire, CT), who registered 1 goal and 3 assists, and continued his strong defensive play. Charlie's highlight reel goal occurred early in the second period when, shorthanded, he rushed down the right side, beat the UVA defenders, and attacked the Cavaliers' goalie, scoring through the 5-hole.

The third star of the game was Brad Cadigan (Freshman-Weymouth, MA). In just his second game for the Hoyas after playing on the Georgetown golf team in the fall, Brad scored 2 goals during the game--one in the first period and one in the second--on a nice backhander and a quick wrist shot.

Many others contributed to the Hoyas' victory. Chris Jordan (Sr-Greenville, DE) was active in both the offensive and defensive zones and ended his Hoya Hockey career on a high note. Pete Owen (Freshman-Westwood, MA) notched a goal and an assist. Joe Horgan (Sr-Lansdale, PA) scored the Hoyas' first goal of the game. Lukas Autenried (Soph-Wallisellen, Switzerland) scored late in the first period to give the Hoyas a 3-0 lead. Alex Yale-Loehr (Soph-Ithaca, NY) scored on a hard wrist shot from the lower right circle in the 3rd period. Assists were delivered by Chris Newsome (Freshman-Andover, MA), Alec Estey (Soph-Toronto, Canada), Lou Aronne (Sr-Greenwich, CT), Dan Lechner (Sr-Rockville, MD), and Brian Brauth (Grad-Hoboken, NJ). Clayton Kossl (Jr-Kinnelon, NJ) was steady in goal, saving 15 of the 16 shots he saw. Hoya defensemen protecting the lead included Gus Thompson (Jr-New Canaan, CT), Peter Bourneuf (Soph-Boston, MA), Charlie Beller (Jr-Chappaqua, NY), and Richie McGinniss (Soph-New Canaan, CT). Kevin Quirk (Soph-Farmington, CT) saw considerable action and played well down the stretch, leading to the Hoyas' 10th victory of the season.
