Upenn

Georgetown 3, University of Pennsylvania 1.

On Friday night, October 9, 2009, at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, VA, the Georgetown Hoya Hockey Team faced off against the University of Pennsylvania Quakers. The Hoyas controlled the tempo of the game, outshot Penn by the wide margin of 46 to 17, and secured the victory by a 3-1 margin. Were it not for 43 saves by the Penn goalie, many of which were at point-blank range, the game would have been a blowout.

Georgetown kept the puck in the offensive zone for most of the game. Hoya defensemen George McGinniss (Sr- New Canaan, CT), Charlie Walsh (Sr- Cheshire, CT), Gus Thompson (Jr- New Canaan, CT), and Pete Bourneuf (Soph-Boston, MA) controlled the blue line, foiled Penn's break-out attempts, blasted shots from the point, and dominated the action. It was a superb defensive effort.

Penn had only a few good scoring opportunities, and each time the Hoya's veteran goalie, Greg Graham (Sr-Downingtown, PA) rose to the occasion. The most spectacular save of the game came with 14:59 remaining in the third period when a Penn attacker fired a hard wrist shot from the slot--only to be denied by an outstanding glove save by Greg Graham.

On offense, forward Lukas Autenried (Soph-Wallisellen, Switzerland) scored the first goal of the game by diving for a loose puck near the crease and directing it past the Penn goalie. It was a great effort,. Assisting on the play from the left wing was Pete Owen (Freshman-Westwood, MA).

Georgetown jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the middle of the second period on a goal by Dan Lechner (Sr-Rockville, MD), with an assist by Alex Yale-Loehr (Soph-Ithaca, NY). Late in the second period, Penn scored to cut the lead to 2-1. Merely 21 seconds later, however, the Hoyas answered on a twisting wrist shot near the goal by Andrew Dorin (Sr-Roslyn, NY), with assists by Kevin Quirk (Soph-Farmington, CT) and Andrew Foley (Sr- New York, NY). That gave the Hoyas a 2-goal lead that was the margin of victory.
