Georgetown 4, George Washington 4 (GW 2-1 in Shootout).
On Saturday, November 15, 2008, at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the Georgetown Hoyas faced off against their cross-town rivals, the Colonials of George Washington University. Although Georgetown controlled long stretches of the game and outshot the Colonials 47 to 26, GW fought hard, took advantage of Hoya penalties, tied the game in regulation, and won the game in a shootout.
GW scored in the first minute of the game and led 1-0. This lead stood until two minutes remained in the second period. At that point, fabulous freshman Alex Yale-Loehr (Ithaca, NY) took control. Within a span of 15 seconds, Alex scored two tough goals to give the Hoyas a 2-1 lead. Alex’s first goal was a backhander in heavy traffic from the slot. For his second goal, Alex darted behind the GW net with the puck, skated to a quick stop in the right circle, and fired a perfectly-placed wrist shot into the upper left corner of the net.
Early in the third period, Hugh Manahan (Sr-Skillman, NJ) scored on a wrist shot from the slot area to give the Hoyas a 3-1 lead. Although the momentum was clearly in favor of the Hoyas at this time, they quickly gave it away with several penalties and at least two turnovers in their own zone. GW took advantage of the situation by scoring two power play goals and one at even-strength to take a 4-2 lead as time was winding down. With 3:43 remaining in the game, Adam Willner (Sr-Montclair, NJ) won a face-off in the Colonials' zone and Dan Lechner (Jr-Rockville, MD) scored on a quick wrist shot from the top of the left circle to tie the game 4-4. The score remained tied at the end of regulation.
Neither team was able to score in a five minute 4-on-4 overtime period. In the ensuing shootout, only Adam Willner was able to find the back of the net for the Hoyas. GW scored on 2 of their first 3 shots to obtain an overtime victory.
