Georgetown Hockey

Georgetown 4, Johns Hopkins 1

On Friday, October 3, 2008, in Baltimore, the Georgetown University hockey team opened the 2008-2009 season with a 4-1 victory over Johns Hopkins University. With significant contributions from the entire team, which consisted of four lines on both offense and defense, the Hoyas outshot the Blue Jays by the incredible margin of 69 to 12.

Throughout the game, the score was much closer than the shot count. At the end of the first period, it was 0-0. In the middle of the second period, Hopkins scored on a breakaway to take a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, the Hoyas tied the score 1-1 when Lucas Autenried (Freshman-Hartford, CT) scored on a wrister from the slot, assisted by Alex Yale-Loehr (Freshman-Ithaca, NY). Late in the second period, Hoya co-captain Adam Wilner (Senior-Montclair, NJ) gave the Hoyas a 2-1 lead when, shorthanded and unassisted, he cut behind a defender in the Hopkins zone and fired a perfectly placed wrist shot into the net from a tough angle.

In the third period, John Ryder (Freshman-Cleveland, OH) bolted out of the penalty box, intercepted a clearing pass in the neutral zone, skated hard to the goal, and fired a low snap shot into the net (unassisted) to give the Hoyas a 3-1 lead. With 2:16 remaining in the game, Adam Wilner iced the victory by scoring on a rebound in heavy traffic, assisted by Louis Aronne (Junior-Greenwich, CT) and Ryan Murphy (Senior-Clifton Park, NY).

On defense, the Hoyas were led by assistant captain Brendan Surma (Senior-Pittsburgh, PA), co-captain Charlie Walsh (Junior-Cheshire, CT), Charlie Beller (Soph-Chappaqua, NY), Ryan Murphy (Senior-Clifton Park, NY), Alec Estey (Freshman-Toronto, Canada), Michael Sortwell (Freshman-St. Louis, MO), Richie McGinniss (Freshman, New Canaan, CT), and Gus Thompson (Soph-New Canaan, CT). Clayton Kossl (Soph-Kinnelon, NJ) was solid in goal, making several outstanding saves to preserve the season-opening victory for the Hoyas.
