Georgetown 5, George Washington 2
On Saturday, October 4, 2008, before a raucous crowd of students from George Washington University (many wearing surgical masks to mock the recent norovirus outbreak on the Hilltop), the Georgetown Hoyas defeated the GW Colonials, 5-2. It was a close game for two periods, with GW leading 2-1 going into the final intermission. In the third period, however, the Hoyas rose to the occasion and scored 4 unanswered goals to secure their second victory in as many games.
GW led 1-0 at the end of the first period and maintained that lead for much of the second period. With 6:15 remaining in the second stanza, Dan Lechner (Junior-Rockville, MD) punched in a rebound to tie the game 1-1, assisted by Adam Wilner (Senior-Montclair, NJ) and Ryan Murphy (Senior-Clifton Park, NY). Two minutes later, however, GW scored again to take a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.
The third period was all Georgetown. Louis Aronne (Freshman-Greenwich, CT) started the action with a beautiful breakaway goal in the first five minutes to tie the game 2-2. Two minutes later, Peter Black (Senior-Bethesda, MD) subdued the crowd with a laser-like wrist shot from close range that found nothing but net. Peter’s goal was assisted by Fabian Fondriest (Freshman-Concord, MA) and gave the Hoyas their first lead of the game, 3-2. With eight minutes remaining in the contest, Alex Yale-Loehr (Freshman-Ithaca, NY) intercepted a pass, skated hard to the net, and scored on a tough backhander (shorthanded and unassisted) that extended the Hoyas’ lead to 4-2. With 2:32 remaining, John Ryder (Freshman-Cleveland, OH) iced the victory by scoring on a hard wrist shot from the slot (unassisted).
Overall, the Hoyas outshot the Colonials 42 to 21. The Georgetown defense was led by the stellar play of Brendan Surma (Senior-Pittsburgh, PA), Charlie Walsh (Junior-Cheshire, CT), and Gus Thompson (Sophomore-New Canaan, CT). Clayton Kossl (Sophomore-Kinnelon, NJ) was superb in goal, notching his second victory of the season.
