Georgetown Hoyas

Georgetown Hockey

UMBC 6, Georgetown 3.

On Halloween night, October 31, 2008, at Piney Orchard Ice Rink in Odenton, MD, the Hoyas faced off against UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County), which currently is ranked #5 in the Southeast Division of the ACHA. The Hoyas were ready for action and came very close to pulling off an upset. It was a tight one-goal game until late in the third period. The final score is misleading. For almost the entire game, there was only a one-goal differential. The scores were 2-1 and 3-2 in the second period, and 4-3 with merely two minutes left in the game. In an attempt to tie the game in the final two minutes, the Hoyas pulled their goalie, UMBC, however, was able to capitalize and scored two empty-netters to seal the victory.

The Hoyas skated hard the entire game and challenged UMBC for every loose puck. Clayton Kossl (Soph-Kinnelon, NJ) made several outstanding saves in goal, especially when the Hoyas were shorthanded. UMBC had a significant advantage in power play opportunities, serving only 12 minutes in the penalty box, compared to 30 minutes for the Hoyas. Alex Yale-Loehr (Freshman-Ithaca, NY) got the Hoyas on the board with 12:51 remaining in the second period, scoring off a tremendous pass in front of the net by Adam Willner (Sr-Montclair, NJ), and further assisted by Hugh Manahan (Sr-Greenville, DE). Lou Aronne (Jr-Greenwich, CT) scored the Hoyas' second goal, off of another quick pass near the net from Adam Willner, and further assisted by Charlie Walsh (Jr-Cheshire, CT). In the third period, Dan Lechner (Jr-Rockville, MD) cut UMBC's lead to 4-3 with a backhander from the right side of the net, assisted once again by Adam Willner, and further assisted by Pete Black (Sr-Bethesda, MD).

On defense, the Hoyas were led by Brendan Surma (Sr-Pittsburgh, PA), Charlie Walsh, Gus Thompson (Jr-New Canaan, CT), Charlie Beller (Soph-Chappaqua, NY), Richie McGinniss (Freshman-New Canaan, CT), Ryan Murphy (Sr-Clifton Park, NY), and Alec Estey (Freshman-Toronto, Canada).
