The Georgetown Hockey organization is very grateful for the support we receive from alumni. Former players provide career guidance, coaching assistance, and even places to sleep on road trips. The team values this relationship greatly, and it is one of the benefits of being involved with Hoya Hockey.

Alumni Game Recap
On Saturday afternoon, April 14, 2007, at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in
Arlington, VA, an extremely strong and spirited Georgetown Hockey Alumni
squad, consisting of players dating back to the Class of 1988, displayed an
abundance of talent, good sportsmanship, and cold beer, and prevailed over
the reigning 2006-2007 ACCHL Champions, the 2006-2007 Hoyas, by the score
of either 12-7 or 13-7, although the score was largely irrelevant.
The following account of the game does not purport to be true, accurate, or
complete (and I apologize for all misspellings and omissions), but a fun
game of hockey did take place and it will go down in history as one of the
finest Georgetown Hockey Alumni Games in history--no hyperbole intended. In
addition, the game was followed by a wonderful party at Coach Brad Card's
house, for which the team and alumni are grateful.
The first period of the game was extraordinary in several respects. Alumni
goaltender Jason Barker (Class of 2001) did not have a goalie stick so he
purchased one from the pro shop during warm-ups. Not to be outdone, Hoya
goalie Greg Graham (all ACCHL first team) did not have any of his goalie
equipment, so he borrowed skates (3 sizes too big) and pads from Gian Kull.
On the ice, Phil Ardire got the alumni started on the right track 4 minutes
into the game with a wrist shot that found nothing but net. 30 seconds
later, Hoya Coach Doug Stewart outskated the alums down the right side,
avoided the defenseman, and zipped a perfect centering pass to Colin
McCrann who found the back of the net to tie the score 1-1. Motivated by
the play of Coach Stewart, the 06-07 Hoyas reeled off 3 straight goals (by
Hugh Manahan, Peter Black, and Chris Jordan) to take a commanding 4-1 lead
with 6:58 remaining in the first period.
The GU alumni, however, did not give up and their legs did not give out.
Instead, they dug deep, found new life, and came roaring back. With 5:30
left in the first period, Phil Ardire fired a laser wrist shot from the
right circle that hit inside the left post and bounced back onto the ice.
T. Sean Lynch quickly collected the rebound and fired another wrister--this
one landing in the back of the net, upper shelf. The scorekeeper was so
impressed with this display of offensive firepower that he awarded 2 goals
on the play (one to Ardire and one to T. Sean) to narrow the score to 4-3.
(This explains in part the discrepancy in the final score). Then, with 23
seconds remaining in the first period, Phil Ardire scored again to tie the
game at 4-4.
At the first intermission, the alumni huddled on the bench with coaches
Mike Sussman and John Colleran. It is unclear what they said to their
players, what they paid them, or what they put in their water bottles. In
any event, the motivational speeches of Coaches Sussman and Colleran
transformed the GU alumni, who went out and dominated the second period.
Although the second period was somewhat of a blur to many, it was clear
that the alumni scored 5 unanswered goal to take a 9-4 lead. During this
period, T. Sean Lynch and George Livadas, former Captains of the Hoya
Hockey Team, along with Mike Jackman, were unstoppable, scoring most or all
of 5 straight alumni goals. Also notable during this period were a
tremendous fake slap shot by Bill Frank and a devastating check on Robbie
Rafter by Peter Black.
In the third period, the alumni spread their considerable wealth and
everyone contributed. Among others, Colin Murphy, Joe Spitz, Adam Morris,
Tucker Martin, and Bret McLeod were all over the ice. All-Star Veterans
Jay Coyle (Class of 1990), Steve Gorman (Class of 1990), and Dave Sheperd
(Class of 1988) teamed up with others to increase and preserve the lead for
goalie Jason Barker, who saved at least 40 shots. Among Jason's greatest
saves was his last one, at the buzzer, when he made a spectacular save of a
quick wrist shot by Coach Brad Card that was destined for the top left
corner of the net.
When interviewed in the locker room after the game and asked about his
stats, Tucker Martin replied, "4 beers and 1 assist." It was a fun game
and no one got hurt. Special thanks to all the alumni who travelled far
and wide for the game, to Peter Black Sr. for operating the clock, to Rob
Walsh for photography, to Brad Card and family for the post-game party, and
to the coaches and current players who joined together with GU alumni for a
fine afternoon of Hoya Hockey
