On Friday night, October 19, 2007, at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the
Georgetown Hoyas and the Liberty University Flames skated to a 2-2 tie in
regulation. Liberty prevailed in overtime by scoring a goal with 1:36
remaining in the 5-minute extra period.
Neither team led by more than one goal the entire game. Georgetown broke
the ice at the 9:43 mark in the first period when Dan Vinson (Sr-Concord,
CA) fired a low laser shot past the Liberty goaltender, assisted by Charlie
Walsh (Soph-Cheshire, CT) and Dan Lechner (Soph-N. Potomac, MD). Liberty
tied the game 1-1 with merely 23 seconds remaining in the first period.
In the second period, Dan Lechner scored on a breakaway for the Hoyas at
the 16:30 mark, assisted by a perfect through-pass from Dan Vinson. That
gave Georgetown a 2-1 lead. From that point on, however, the Hoyas began
to self-destruct due to a series of penalties that left them short-handed
for virtually the remainder of the game. The most telling statistic of the
game was the number of penalty minutes served: Georgetown 32, Liberty 16.
Despite fueling the Flames by giving Liberty one and two-man advantages,
and despite being outshot 36 to 17, the Hoyas and their goaltender Greg
Graham (Soph-Downingtown, PA) hung tough and gave up only one other goal in
regulation. That goal, with 3:23 left in the second period, was actually
blocked by the leg pad of the Hoya goaltender. The game official, however,
ruled that the pad was "over the line" and awarded Liberty a disputed and
critical goal that allowed them to tie the game 2-2. Nevertheless, the
Hoyas did not play smart for much of the game and came up short largely due
to penalties.
