Georgetown 5, George Mason University 3.
On Saturday night, February 2, 2008, at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the
Georgetown Hoya Hockey team faced off against the Patriots of George Mason
University. The Patriots of George Mason were overwhelming underdogs going
into the game, as they were winless in league play and firmly entrenched in
last place.
The Hoyas appeared to take to game lightly, but the Patriots were geared
for an upset. Although Georgetown outshot the Patriots by the incredible
margin of 70 to 18, the Patriots fought hard the entire game and rallied
behind the outstanding play of their goaltender Sean Hershman (Sr-Clifton,
VA). Each time the Hoyas would score, the Patriots would answer, and the
score was tied 3-3 with 6 minutes left in the game.
Will Peterson (Jr-Wayzata, MN) got the Hoyas rolling with 6:56 remaining in
the first period by scoring on a hard and well-placed wrist shot from the
slot, assisted by Cody Ling (Fr-Chatham, MA). George Mason then tied the
game 1-1. At the 9:28 mark in the second period, Dave Glynn (Sr-Stoughton,
MA) scored a shorthanded goal from close range to regain the lead, assisted
by Steve Russell (Sr-Andover, MA). George Mason then tied the game 2-2.
With 8:26 remaining in the third period, Pete Black (Jr-Bethesda, MD),
scored on a pass from behind the net, assisted by Hugh Manahan
(Jr-Skillman, NJ), and Dan Lechner (Soph-N. Potomac, MD) to give the Hoyas
a 3-2 lead. The resilient Patriots, however, tied the game 3-3 with 6:11
remaining on a breakaway goal by Adam Wilkinson (Sr-Chantilly, VA). At
this point, the "Mason Nation" was on its feet and attempting to invoke the
magic of its recent Final Four run in the NCAA basketball tournament.
The senior line of Conor Hickton, Dave Glynn, and Steve Russell, however,
spoiled the Patriots' plans for a Giant upset. With 5:25 remaining, Conor
Hickton (Sr-Pittsburgh, PA), found an opening and scored off a rebound from
a hard shot by Dave Glynn, who was assisted by Steve Russell. In the final
minute of play, George Mason pulled its goaltender, and Steve Russell
scored an empty-netter from the blue line, assisted by Conor Hickton. Hoya
goaltender Ryan Berg (Soph-Pewaukee, WI) saved 15 of 18 shots to secure the
Georgetown victory.
