Georgetown Hoyas

Georgetown Hockey

University of Maryland 4, Georgetown 3.

On Friday night, February 1, 2008, before a spirited crowd of students,
family, and friends at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Virginia,
the University of Maryland Terrapins (ACHA Division 1) defeated the
Georgetown Hoyas 4-3.

After a scoreless first period, in which the Hoyas outshot the Terrapins 9
to 5, Maryland scored 3 second-period goals to take a 3-1 lead going into
the final 20 minutes of action. The Hoyas' goal in the second period was
scored during a 5-on-3 power play by Conor Hickton (Sr-Pittsburgh, PA),
assisted by Dave Glynn (Sr-Stoughton, MA).

In the opening minute of the third period, Maryland scored again to take a
commanding 4-1 lead. At that point, things looked very bleak for the
Hoyas. During the last half of the second period and the first half of the
third, the Terrapins were outskating and outhitting the Hoyas and
frustration started to set in. The Hoyas committed 7 penalties during this
time, including 3 for unsportsmanlike conduct, and co-captain Conor Hickton
was ejected from the game.

Just when it looked as if the Hoyas were falling apart, senior co-captain
Dave Glynn showed his mettle and led the team on a valiant comeback. With
7:30 remaining in the 3rd period, Steve Russell (Sr-Andover, MA) fired a
wrist shot from the left circle and Dave Glynn scored on the rebound to cut
the Maryland lead to 4-2. Within the next three minutes, the Hoyas scored
again to close the gap to 4-3, this time after Brendan Surma
(Jr-Pittsburgh, PA) fired a shot from the blue line that was stuffed in by
Steve Russell, assisted by Dave Glynn.

In the final 4 minutes of the game, the rejuvenated Hoyas outskated
Maryland and played their best hockey of the evening. Although they had
several scoring opportunities and close calls, the Hoyas were not able to
penetrate the goal line to force overtime. For the game, the Hoyas outshot
Maryland 32 to 29.
