Georgetown 5, North Carolina State 4 (Overtime)

On Friday night, January 18, 2008, at the Rec Zone in Raleigh, North
Carolina, the Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Wolfpack of NC State, in
overtime, 5 to 4. It was a great game with a fantastic finish.

After the Wolfpack took a 1-0 lead, the Hoyas scored 3 unanswered goals and
appeared to take control of the game. Midway through the 1st period, Dan
Lechner (Soph-N. Potomac, MD) scored off a rebound to tie the game,
assisted by Charlie Beller (Fr-Chappaqua, NY). Five minutes later, Joe
Horgan (Soph-Lansdale, PA) stole the puck off the boards, delivered a
perfect pass to Rick Cella (Sr-Long Valley, NY) at the top of the right
circle, and Rick fired a laser-beam wrist shot past the Wolfpack goalie to
give the Hoyas a 2-1 lead. Midway through the 2nd period, Conor Hickton
(Sr-Pittsburgh, PA) scored from close range on a power play to extend the
Hoya lead to 3-1.

Just when the Hoyas seemed to take control. the Wolfpack struck back with 2
quick goals in the last five minutes of the 2d period to tie the game 3-3.
With 2:37 remaining in the 2d period, however, Dave Glynn (Sr-Stoughton,
MA) scored from a tough angle on the right side to give the Hoyas a 4-3
lead heading into the second intermission.

The 3d period was an intense defensive struggle, with the Hoyas holding the
Wolfpack to 7 shots. The Hoya defense was led by Brendan Surma
(Jr-Pittsburgh, PA), Charlie Walsh (Soph-Cheshire, CT), Eric Estey
(Sr-Toronto, CA), Ryan Murphy (Jr-Clifton Park, NJ), Paul Svirbel
(Jr-Pittsburgh, PA), Rick Cella, Charlie Beller, and Hoya goaltender Greg
Graham (Soph-Downingtown, PA). With 3:22 left in regulation, however, NC
State found the back of the net and tied the game 4-4.

The clock was set for a 5 minute overtime, 4 on 4. At the 3:40 mark, Dan
Lechner intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and delivered a pass to
Conor Hickton. Conor outskated the Wolfpack down the right side, cut toward
the goal, and fired a perfect wrist shot inside the far post to win the
game. It was a fantastic finish for the Hoyas as they piled onto their
co-captain, Conor Hickton.
