Georgetown 7, North Carolina State 4.
On Friday night, February 15, 2008, before a vocal contingent of the Hoya
Hockey faithful, Georgetown defeated NC State 7-4 to clinch first place in
the ACCHL for the second consecutive year. Georgetown completed the
regular season with a flourish, winning 6 consecutive league games to
finish with a league record of 9-3, tied with Duke for first place. The
team picture attached below tells the story at the end of the game.
The game with NC State was a rough and tough battle. Georgetown led the
entire game (2-1, 4-2, 5-3, 6-4, and finally 7-4) but could never fully put
the Wolfpack away. There were 25 minor penalties in the game, including 9
for roughing. It was that kind of game: hard-fought and physical, with
every loose puck fiercely contested.
The offensive stars of the game were senior co-captains Conor Hickton
(Pittsburgh, PA) and Dave Glynn (Stoughton, MA). Conor, the leading goal
scorer in the entire ACCHL this season, capped off the regular season with
a hat trick, scoring twice in the first seven minutes of the game and
adding one for good measure in the third period to lead Georgetown to
victory. Dave Glynn, MVP of the ACCHL last season and among its leaders in
all offensive categories once again this year, had another outstanding
game, scoring 2 goals and adding 2 assists.
Others contributing to the Hoyas' first-place victory were Brendan Surma
(Jr-Pittsburgh, PA) with 2 assists, Dan Lechner (Soph-N. Potomac, MD), with
1 goal and 1 assist, Hugh Manahan (Jr-Skillman, NJ), with 1 goal and 1
assist, and Peter Black (Jr-Bethesda, MD), Steve Russell (Sr-Andover, MA),
and Charlie Walsh (Soph-Cheshire, CT), each with an assist.
The rugged and battle tested Georgetown defense gave the Wolfpack all they
could handle. The Hoya defense was led by Brendan Surma, Charlie Walsh,
Charlie Beller (Fr-Chappaqua, NY), Eric Estey (Sr-Toronto, Canada), Ryan
Murphy (Jr-Clifton Park, NY), and Paul Svirbel (Jr-Pittsburgh, PA).
