William Patterson University 6, Georgetown 4.
On Friday night, November 30, 2007, the Georgetown University hockey team
faced-off against the Pioneers of William Patterson University, which is a
school of about 11,000 students located approximately 20 miles west of New
York City. Going into the game, the Pioneers' record was an impressive
19-1-1, and they were ranked #2 in the American Collegiate Hockey
Association (ACHA), Division II Southeast Region.
The Hoyas were ready for the challenge and gave the Pioneers all they could
handle. Although the Pioneers prevailed by the score of 6-4, Georgetown
skated hard, played well in most phases of the game, and outshot the
Pioneers 33 to 27.
After giving up two early power play goals, the Hoyas got on the board with
5:27 remaining in the first period on a rebound goal by Conor Hickton
(Sr-Pittsburgh, PA), assisted by Charlie Walsh (Soph-Cheshire, CT) and Dan
Lechner (Soph-N.Potomac, MD). Early in the second period, Dave Glynn
(Sr-Stoughton, MA) found Conor Hickton in the slot, and Conor delivered a
perfect backdoor pass to Dan Lechner, who buried it in the back of the net
to cut the William Patterson lead to 3-2.
In the middle of the second period, the Pioneers reeled off 3 unanswered
goals to take a commanding 6-2 lead. But the Hoyas did not give up. With
1:48 remaining in the second period, Charlie Walsh scored on a power play
wrist shot from the circle, assisted by Dave Glynn and Dan Lechner. Six
minutes into the third period, Joe Horgan (Soph-Lansdale, PA) fired a wrist
shot into the right corner of the goal, assisted by Charlie Beller
(Fr-Chappaqua, NY), to make it 6-4. At this point, the Tim Noonan
(Jr-Rochester, NH) fan club was on its feet cheering the Hoyas.
During the final 14 minutes of the game, the Hoyas fought hard and had
several scoring opportunities, but could not convert. During this time,
the Hoyas' defense buckled down and shut out the speedy Pioneers. The
Hoya defense was led by Brendan Surma (Jr-Pittsburgh, PA), Paul Svirbel
(Jr-Pittsburgh, PA), Andrew Dorin (Soph-Roslyn, NY), Charlie Beller, and
Charlie Walsh. Once again, Greg Graham (Soph-Downingtown, PA) was
outstanding in goal, stopping 21 shots and frustrating the Pioneers'
high-powered offense.
