Georgetown Hoyas

Georgetown Hockey

Georgetown 2, Temple 1.

On Friday, November 9, 2007, the Temple University Owls travelled to the
Kettler Capitals Iceplex to face-off against the Georgetown Hoyas. Going
into the game, the Owls were perched atop the standings of the Mid-Atlantic
Collegiate Hockey Association, with a perfect record or 6-0 in the
conference and 9-2 overall. Temple was riding a 5-game winning streak,
including impressive wins over UMBC, St. Joe's, and Villanova (Division 1).

The Georgetown Hoyas, however, were more than ready for the challenge and
upset the Owls by the score of 2 to 1. The Hoyas victory was impressive
and a total team effort, with many players contributing. Greg Graham
(Soph-Downingtown, PA) was stellar in goal, stopping 31 of 32 shots,
several in spectacular fashion. The Hoya defense was anchored by Charlie
Walsh (Soph-Cheshire, CT), Eric Estey (Sr-Toronto, CAN), Brendan Surma
(Sr-Pittsburgh, PA), Paul Svirbel (Jr-Pittsburgh, PA), and Andrew Dorin
(Soph-Roslyn, NY). The Hoyas' victory was also made possible by effective
forechecking and spirited play in the neutral zone by Conor Hickton
(Sr-Pittsburgh, PA), Justin McNamara (Fr-Wrentham, MA), Andrew Foley
(Soph-New York, NY), Sander Porcelli (Soph-Montclair, NJ), Joe Horgan
(Soph-Lansdale, PA), Dan Lechner (Soph-N. Potomac, MD), Chris Jordan
(Jr-Greenville, DE), and Vince Ko (Soph-Rockville, MD).

Temple led 1-0 going into the second period when Georgetown capitalized on
a power play. Brendan Surma started the action with a powerful slapshot
from the point. Brendan's shot was rebounded by Joe Horgan, who redirected
it to Dave Glynn (Sr-Stoughton, MA), and Dave buried it in the back of the
net to tie the score 1-1 with 15:52 remaining in the second period. For
the remainder of the second period, and most of the third, the Hoyas and
the Owls battled hard all over the ice with neither team able to gain an
advantage. Finally, on a power play with 3:34 remaining, Dave Glynn
delivered a perfect crossing pass to Conor Hickton, and Conor blasted a
beautiful one-timer past the Temple goaltender to secure the victory.
