UMBC 6, Georgetown 1.
On Saturday, November 3, 2007, at Piney Orchard Ice Arena in Odenton, MD,
the Retrievers of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus, defeated
the Georgetown Hoyas by the score of 6 to 1.
The Retrievers, who actively recruit hockey players from the Junior A,
Junior B, Prep and HS ranks, are a highly competitive program that
practices three days a week. Although the Hoyas started out strong and
outshot the Retrievers in the first 10 minutes, UMBC gained the upper hand
by scoring two shorthanded goals within 18 seconds of each other at the
midway mark of the first period to take a 2-0 lead. At that point, the
UMBC defense stiffened and their Big Dawgs took control of the game,
gradually building a 6-0 lead at the end of two periods.
In the third period, the Hoyas showed their grit and determination and
adjusted to the speed and physical play of UMBC on both offense and
defense. In the third period, the Hoyas outshot the Retrievers 12 to 8 and
outscored them 1 to 0. On defense, Charlie Walsh (Soph-Chesire, CT),
Brendan Surma (Jr-Pittsburgh, PA), Eric Estey (Sr-Toronto, Canada), Charlie
Beller (Freshman-Chappaqua, NY), and Andrew Dorin (Soph-Roslyn, NY) held
the Retrievers at bay. On offense, the Hoyas moved the puck and had
several scoring opportunities. With 7:08 remaining, the Hoyas' hard work
was rewarded by an even-strength goal by Cody Ling (Freshman-Chatham, MA),
assisted by Tim Noonan (Jr-Rochester, NH) and Dave Glynn (Sr-Stoughton,
MA).
