Game 1: Hoyas Lose to Richmond 2-5

Hoya Hockey is back in action!  On Saturday evening, September 11, 2021, at The St. James sports complex in Springfield, VA, the Georgetown University ice hockey team faced-off against the Spiders of the University of Richmond.  Due to the pandemic, this was the first hockey game for the Hoyas in 19 months—since the semi-finals of the ACCHL Championship Tournament in North Carolina on February 12, 2020.

Due to the graduation of a large and talented 2020 class, the 2021-2022 Hoyas consist of 18 new players who are getting their first taste of ACC Hockey.  The new Hoyas are led by captains Adam Cookson (Sr. Medway, MA), Ty Greenberg (Sr. Toronto, ON), and Danny Overcash (Sr. Chevy Chase, MD).  Former captain and grad student Robert Churchill has received a waiver and will be returning for his fifth year of Hoya Hockey!

Saturday’s game against Richmond was a hard-fought contest that defied statistical odds.  The Hoyas outshot the Spiders 50-26.  This usually bodes well for the team with 50 shots on goal. Nevertheless, the Spiders found the back of the net more often and secured a 5-2 victory.

The final score was not indicative of the closeness of the game.  The Hoyas broke the ice first on a goal in high traffic by Dan Sippel (Soph. Buffalo, NY) at the 11:22 mark in the first period, assisted by Joey Schiavone (Jr. Tampa, FL).  Richmond answered and led 2-1 going into the first intermission.  The only goal in the second period was a nice rebound by Frankie Gialanella (Jr. Westfield, NJ), assisted by Naveen Gupta (Grad. Toronto, ON) and Adam Cookson (Sr. Medway, MA)  with 14:01 remaining in the second period.  For the remainder of the second period and the first 10 minutes of the third period, the score remained tied at 2-2.  In the final 10 minutes of the game, however, the Spiders capitalized on two odd-man rushes and an empty-netter to seal the victory.

Next Game: Saturday, September 18, 2021 vs. Montgomery College at 9:30 pm at The St. James sports complex in Springfield, VA
