Game Recap: Jan. 19 @ Millersville (4-2 W)
On Friday, January 19, 2018, the Georgetown Men’s Ice Hockey team travelled to Lancaster, PA for an annual matchup with Millersville University. It was the Hoyas’ first game of the new year but there was no sign of any rust from the time off. Millersville came into the game a perfect 4-0 against ACCHL teams, including undefeated GW and second place St. Joe’s.
The first period got off to a quick start with both teams getting into double-digit shot totals before the halfway mark. Hoya netminder Josh Heckman (Sr. Reading, PA) looked solid playing in his home state and made a few key saves early on to help the Hoyas kill off three first period penalties. Both teams were solid in their own zone and headed into the first intermission dead locked at 0-0.
The second period was a different story as the Hoyas dominated at both ends of the ice. A few minutes in, Nick Gallo (Fr. Summit, NJ) picked a Millersville defenseman in the corner, circled the net and fired a hard shot to the far side that broke open what would be a fantastic period for him and his line mates. Midway through the period, Peter Hagerty (Jr, Wayne, NJ) stopped on a dime behind the net and threaded a pass through the slot to Gallo who buried it to make it 2-0. Finally, with 5 minutes remaining, Jack Cavanaugh (Fr, Fairfield, CT) flew up the left wing on an odd-man rush, made a cross ice pass to Hagerty who put it right to a trailing Gallo who then one-timed it for his third goal of the period. To make things more impressive, the Hoyas gave up one shot on goal the entire period.
Millersville came storming out in the third period scoring just 66 seconds in to cut the deficit to two. The next 12 minutes and change were filled with back and forth action. Both teams fought to create scoring chances. Millersville ultimately found the net again on a bouncing puck in front of the net. After an ensuing timeout, the Hoyas showed tremendous poise, capped off by a spectacular individual effort from Nick Gallo who rifled a shot from the right dot for his fourth goal of the game with just 4 minutes remaining.
From there, Heckman and the Hoya defense shut down any last assault by Millersville and the Hoyas claimed their first victory of 2018, 4-2 over Millersville. It was a huge win for the team, giving Millersville their first loss against an ACCHL team and the Hoyas momentum as they head into the home stretch of their schedule.
