Game 5: Hoyas Dominate GW at Capital One Arena. 8-4 Hoyas.

On Sunday evening, September 26, 2021, the Hoyas faced-off against their cross-town rivals, the Colonials of George Washington University.  There was a large crowd of students, friends, and parents in attendance, as the game was played in an NHL venue--the Capital One Arena—following the preseason game between the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins.  The college game did not disappoint the Hoya fans in attendance.

The 2021-2022 Hoyas got off to a great start, scoring the first three goals of the game to silence the “Georgetown sucks” chants from the GW student body.  The Hoyas’ first goal came at the 11:41 mark when freshman Teddy Dyer scored on a low shot from the left circle, assisted by captain Danny Overcash and fellow defenseman Dan Herdiech.  At the 17:08 mark, the Hoyas scored on a power play goal by sophomore Dan Sippel, assisted by Teddy Dyer and grad student JP Millisor.  Within the next 30 seconds, the Hoyas shocked GW and took a 3-0 lead when freshman Tyler Anderson scored on a slap pass, assisted by med student Naveen Gupta and captain Adam Cookson.  In the last minute of the first frame, GW got on the board to cut the Hoyas’ lead to 3-1 at the end of the first period.

The second period featured tighter checking and fewer scoring opportunities for each team.  Once again, the Hoyas struck first, this time on a wicked slap shot from the left point by JP Millisor, assisted by Adam Sippel.  This extended the Hoyas’ lead to 4-1, but GW scored on a power play several minutes later to close the gap to 4-2 at the end of the second period.

The third period was fast and furious, with the Hoyas and GW trading goals during the first seven minutes.  GW scored first at the 1:13 mark to cut the Hoyas’ lead to 4-3.  But Hoya captain Danny Overcash kicked into overdrive and answered with a great wrist shot from the right point to give the Hoyas a two-goal lead, assisted by Tyler Anderson and junior Joey Schiavone.  GW, however, would not go away, and scored merely one-minute later to close the gap to 5-4.

In the final 12 minutes of the game, and realizing it was crunch time,  Hoyas stepped-up, skated hard, were relentless and determined, and overpowered the Colonials with three critical and unanswered goals.  The first came on a nice lateral move from the point by Danny Overcash who fired a hard wrister from the point.  Senior Adam Cookson redirected the shot into the back of the net, assisted by Rob Churchill.  This gave the Hoyas a 6-4 lead.  With 8 minutes remaining, Hoya speedster Adam Cookson struck again, this time on a quick wrist shot from the left circle to give the Hoyas a commanding 7-4 lead.  With 5 minutes remaining, Hoya freshman Tyler Anderson put the final nail in the GW coffin with a tally from close range, ending the scoring at 8-4 in favor of the Hoyas.  Hoya netminder Ty Greenberg sealed the deal in the last five minutes, and throughout the game, with 17 saves to secure a very impressive victory and cap-off a great weekend of Hoya Hockey.
