Game 6: Hoyas Destroy UNC Charlotte 7-0
On Friday evening, October 1st, 2021, the Georgetown Hoyas faced-off against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) at the Rockville Ice Arena in Rockville, MD.
Coming off an exciting win against their rivals, George Washington University, at the Capital One Arena, the Georgetown Hoyas could not wait to face-off against UNCC in their first league game of the season. In the first period, however, the Hoyas started out slowly. A series of missed opportunities and bad passes kept the score knotted at zero for the first 15 minutes of the game. Despite the lack of goals, Georgetown was dominating the pace of play and it was only a matter of time before the flood gates opened. Then, with 5 minutes remaining in the first period, sophomore Daniel “Sippy” Sippel hammered a wrist shot into the upper shelf of the goal on a pass from freshman Peter Korn. For the remainder of the first period, the Hoyas were held scoreless despite their abundance of scoring chances. It was 1-0 Hoyas going into the first intermission.
In the second period, determined to put more pucks in the net, the Hoyas came out flying. Within the first 3 minutes, freshman Tyler Anderson sped past multiple UNCC defenders down the left side to score an acrobatic backhanded goal. Now, with a two goal lead, the Hoyas continued pressuring UNCC with many shots and entire shifts in the UNCC defensive zone. With 9 minutes remaining in the second period, Hoya dangler Joe Walker sniped a goal past the UNCC netminder on a clean pass from junior JP Ottariano. Not even 3 minutes later, Georgetown defensemen Joey Schiavone decided to take over the game. During a possession in the UNCC defensive zone, Schiavone skated across the middle hashmarks and buried a low shot into the back of the net. Merely seconds later, Georgetown senior Jake Sporn cleanly won the face-off at center ice back to Schaivone, who proceeded to speed by three UNCC defenders down the right side before sniping his second goal in ten seconds on a backhand deke. It was now 5-0 in favor of the Hoyas and UNCC was stunned heading into the second intermission.
In the third period, the Hoyas continued to dominate the game, but due to multiple missed backdoor opportunities and solid goaltending the Hoyas were held scoreless until 7 minutes remained in the third period. At this point, Hoya Freshman Teddy “Bear” Dyer rocketed a rebound of his own shot past the UNCC goalkeeper to put the Hoyas up 6-0. Soon thereafter, Hoya sophomore Joe Walker returned the favor to his line mate JP Ottariano by sliding a pass into the slot. JP quickly went backhand-to-forehand and sniped the puck into the back of the net giving the Hoyas a 7-0 lead.
As time expired, Georgetown goalkeeper and senior captain Ty Greenburg celebrated a hard-fought shutout after saving 24 shots on goal from UNCC and securing a 7-0 Georgetown win.
Georgetown’s record is now 4-2, with three straight victories. Hoya Saxa!
