Game 7: Hoyas Lose in Hard Fought Battle to Delaware 2-6
On Friday, October 22, 2021, the Hoya Hockey team faced-off against the Fighting Blue Hens of the University of Delaware. The game was played at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD.
The Blue Hens came out flying in the first period and went into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead. At the 7:47 mark in the second period, Hoya forward JP Ottariano (Jr. Reston, VA), while skating left to right in the slot, received a nice pass from behind the net from Adam Cookson (Sr. Medway, MA), and fired a perfect wrist shot against the grain into the left upper shelf to cut the lead to 2-1. With three minutes remaining in the period, the Blue Hens scored on a power play to take a two-goal lead into the second intermission.
The third period started well but ended poorly for the Hoyas. Merely 39 seconds into the final frame, Hoya forward Dan Sippel (Soph. Buffalo, NY) beat the Delaware netminder on a wrist shot from the left circle, assisted by Rob Churchill (Grad, Medford, NJ). This cut the Delaware lead to 3-2, but the Blue Hens (who have a rink on campus and practice three times a week) answered with the final three goals to secure a 6-2 victory. Although the final result was not what the Hoyas wanted, netminder and captain Ty Greenberg (Sr. Toronto, ON) kept the game competitive for 50 minutes with 44 saves.
