Game Recap: September 15 @ UVA (4-8 L)

On Friday, September 15, 2017, at the Main Street Arena in Charlottesville, VA, the 2017-2018 Georgetown University hockey team faced-off against the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia.  It was the season opener for each team.   The Cavaliers were champions of the ACC Hockey League last year, and they had a full house of fans at the arena to cheer the home team and  jeer the visitors.

The Hoyas never led during the game, but never gave up.  In fact, the opposite was true.  The Hoyas were down 4-0 with 6:50remaining in the second period and the situation looked bleak.  The resilient Hoyas, however, fought back with renewed energy, scored three unanswered goals, and cut the lead to 4-3 with 16:27 remaining in the third period.    The UVA crowd suddenly became very quiet.

Unfortunately, during a three-minute span toward the latter half of the final period, the Cavaliers scored three quick goals on a tip-in, a redirection, and a fluke.  But they all counted and decided the outcome.  In the last few minutes of the game, each team scored another goal.  The final was UVA 8, Georgetown 4.

The game was closer and more competive that the final score.  Georgetown fought hard and competed until the final buzzer.  The shot totals were 44 for UVA and 39 for Georgetown.  There were many positives.   Of Georgetown’s 19 skaters, 7 are freshmen (36.8%) and they made significant contributions.  That bodes well for the future.

The Hoyas’ first goal was scored by Joe Cooley (Freshman, Buffalo, NY) on a wrist shot from the right circle, assisted by Jack Angelini (Freshman, Oak Park, IL) and George Brennan (Soph, River Forest, IL).   At the beginning of the third period, Luc Woodard (Sr, West Tisbury, MA) scored on a rebound in heavy traffic, assisted by Jack McGuire (Freshman, Randolph, NJ).  With 16:27remaining in the third period, Alex Sideropoulos (Jr, Hanover, MA) scored on a nice wrister from the lower left circle and into the top shelf, assisted by George Brennan.  This cut the lead to 4-3.  Finally, with 3:26 remaining, Nick Gallo (Freshman, Summit, NJ) scored on a tip-in, assisted by Jarrett Ross (Sr, Summit, NJ) and Jack Cavanaugh (Freshman, Fairfield, CT).

The Captains of this year’s team are Connor Prochnow (Sr, Kansas City, MO) and Matt Tang (Sr, Randolph, NJ). The team is coached by Alan Newstadtl (P ’15) and William Moran (Exec. MBA ’17).

The Hoyas’ next game (Home Opener) is this Friday, September 22,  beginning at 10:00 pm at the Capital One Arena (formerly the Verizon Center) in downtown Washington, DC against George Washington University.
