Hoyas Pick up their First League Win vs Richmond - Game Recap

Sep 10, 2022

On Saturday, September 10, 2022, at The St. James sports complex in Springfield, VA, the 2022-2023 Georgetown Hoya Hockey team began the season on a strong note by soundly defeating the University of Richmond 6-1.

The scoring summary is presented below, but the Hoyas’ defense was especially impressive, holding Richmond to 17 shots overall (5 in the first period, 6 in the second, and 6 in the final frame). The shots that got on net were wiped out by the stellar goaltending of Mark Peracchia (Soph, NYC).

The Hoyas got off to a great start by scoring three unanswered goals in the first period. The first tally was a power play goal by Joey Schiavone (Jr, Palmetto, FL), who scored at close range after crisp passes from Joe Walker (Jr, Chicago, IL) and Peter Korn (Soph, Morristown, NJ). The Hoyas’ second tally was scored by JP Ottariano (Sr, Reston, VA), who netted a rebound after a hard low shot from the point by Mike Miele (Sr, Reading, MA) and further assisted by Frankie Gialanella (Sr, Westfield, NJ). With 9:03 remaining in the first frame, Joey Schiavone scored his second power play goal of the period on a strong wrist shot from the right circle, assisted by Peter Korn and Dan Sippel (Jr, Buffalo, NY). The Hoyas went into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

Richmond attempted a comeback in the second period by scoring first to cut the Hoyas’ lead to 3-1. With 5:30 minutes remaining in the period, Richmond began to unravel by committing a double minor penalty, the second consisting of unsportsmanlike conduct from their coach. Georgetown quickly took advantage of the 5 on 3, scoring in 24 seconds on a nice pass from Joey Schiavone to Dan Sippel, who buried it from the back door. This gave the Hoyas a commanding 4-1 lead heading into the second intermission.

The third period was all Hoyas, who outshot Richmond 17 to 6. Joey Schiavone scored his third goal of the game, an opening day hat trick, at even strength on a perfectly placed wrist shot from the right circle, assisted by Ashley Johnston (Grad, Burlington, ON). The Hoyas sealed the game in the final three minutes when Chris Doherty (Jr, Chicago, IL) scored on a rebound after a shot from the point by Scott Burnette (Jr, Park City, UT), and assisted by Jay Kim (Soph, Toronto, ON).

The Hoyas’ victory was supported by five “rookies” who suited up with the Hoyas for the first time. The new and undefeated Hoyas consisted of Ashley Johnston (Grad, Burlington, ON), Austin Gatesman (Jr, Pittsburgh, PA), Ben Epes (Fr, Westport, CT), Sean O’Connor (Fr, Newton, MA), and back-up goalie Matt Choi (Fr, Boston, MA).
